Physician self-referral helps isolate radiology

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

Ever had the feeling you're all alone in the world? Then you might know what it's like to be a radiology professional at a conference dominated by other medical specialties.

Radiology professionals did feel a bit isolated at this week's Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) meeting in San Francisco. They weren't actually alone, of course, but spent a lot of time rubbing elbows with representatives from other medical specialties, many of which are keen on taking over imaging studies once conducted by radiologists, according to an article by staff writer Tracie L. Thompson in our Imaging Center Digital Community.

Physician self-referral has put radiology at odds with almost every other medical specialty, according to many MGMA attendees from the radiology community. This dynamic makes it extremely difficult for radiology to be taken seriously when it pushes for regulatory measures to solve the self-referral dilemma.

Will radiologists eventually stop going to meetings like MGMA if their leaders don't take a stronger stand against physician self-referral? Not likely. Because after all, it's always a good idea to know what the competition is up to. Read the whole story in our Imaging Center Digital Community, at centers.auntminnie.com.

In a related article from the MGMA show, staff writer Eric Barnes attended a presentation intended for gastroenterologists on various threats to their practice -- especially virtual colonoscopy, as it turns out. Find out what's keeping gastroenterologists up at night in our Virtual Colonoscopy Digital Community, at vc.auntminnie.com.
