New U.S. budget spares radiology from major cuts

The Bush Administration's proposed federal budget for fiscal-year 2009 largely preserves funding levels for radiology-related programs, with proposed spending close to fiscal-year 2008 levels.

Information provided by the American College of Radiology shows the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering has a proposed budget of $300.3 million, an increase of $1.6 million over fiscal year 2008.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Center for Devices and Radiological Health would receive $290.9 million, representing a hike of $7.1 million compared to fiscal-year 2008 spending. User fees from the Medical Device User Fee and Modernization Act and Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) would contribute approximately $49 million to the proposed budget, $3.3 million above current levels.

Scientific research for nuclear medicine and molecular imaging would receive approximately $13.1 million, which is $8.8 million less than fiscal year 2008. Proposed funding for the Isotope Production and Applications program is $19.8 million, which includes plans to enhance management and production scheduling.

The proposed budget for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is $1.02 billion, which would hike funding by $90.9 million above the fiscal-year 2008 appropriation. Because approximately 90% of NRC funding comes from fees, the NRC would need to collect $855.5 million in fiscal-year 2009, up $76.4 million from fiscal 2008.

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services would receive approximately $66.2 million, including $48 million in Public Health Evaluation Funds, in fiscal 2009. That amount is $5.6 million more than fiscal year 2008.
