National Institutes of Health (NIH) director Dr. Elias Zerhouni will be stepping down at the end of October.
Zerhouni is leaving his position to pursue writing projects and explore other professional opportunities, according to the NIH.
Zerhouni was appointed to lead the NIH in 2002, after previously serving as executive vice dean at the School of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He was trained as a diagnostic radiologist at Johns Hopkins and became chair of the department in 1996.
