Buyer's Guide Update: PACS -- it's not just for radiology anymore

Radiology has long considered itself the guardian of PACS. This worldview continued to be valid as long as the need for digital images confined itself primarily to the radiology department.

But this perception has begun to break down as the need for PACS has percolated throughout the healthcare enterprise. Cardiology, orthopedics, and other disciplines are now clamoring for -- and usually getting -- access to digital images almost as quickly as their radiology brethren.

That change was evident at the recent Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) meeting in Seattle, where healthcare informatics researchers and vendors discussed the challenges of PACS in the healthcare enterprise. Market activity continues to heat up around the utilization of digital image management technology for other specialties, and many industry analysts believe that the lessons learned in radiology will help spark this effort.
