More than 20,000 matches were made to first- and second-year residency positions under the National Resident Matching Program (NMRP). Overall, there was 5.3% increase in participation in 2004, according to the Washington, DC-based organization.
In imaging, there were 138 first-year residency (PGY-1) positions available in diagnostic radiology, radiation oncology, and nuclear medicine in 2004. There were 977 second-year residency (PGY-2) positions available this year in imaging fields.
One hundred percent of the PGY-1 positions were filled in radiation oncology by seniors, while 96% of the diagnostic radiology slots were taken. For PGY-2 candidates, 86% of seniors were matched in radiation oncology and 80% in diagnostic radiology.
The match rate for all U.S. medical school seniors seeking PGY-1 positions was 92.9%. More than 84% of the medical school seniors were paired with one of their three top program choices.
