Diagnostic Imaging: Brain by Anne G. Osborn, Susan Blaser, and Karen L. Salzman
Elsevier, St. Louis, 2004, $249
Dr. Anne Osborn authored the seminal text in academic neuroradiology, 1994's Diagnostic Neuroradiology: A Text/Atlas. The latest work by Osborn and colleagues is an ambitious addition to the Diagnostic Imaging series.
The series emphasizes high density, essential information, summarized in a bullet point format. This text is limited to brain anatomy and pathology, with information divided into two main sections: those diagnoses with a pathologic category and those entities with an appearance and anatomic-based differential diagnosis. Subsections are color-coded for quick and easy reference.
Each entity is thoroughly defined with a discussion of imaging findings, pathologic findings, and differential diagnosis. A "key facts" section highlights salient features presented in the text. An interesting differential diagnosis thumbnail gallery is used to demonstrate multiple entities with similar appearance or presentation. Numerous excellent medical illustrations are provided, which reinforces material presented in the text. In true Osborn fashion, there are many quality pathologic photos.
The strengths of this text lie in the extensive information, the vast image collection, and the easy-to-read format. A section on clinical issues -- a helpful addition that many standard diagnostic radiology texts lack -- accompanies each entity.
For some readers, the volume of information may be overwhelming. The format does lack the continuity and clarity of prose. As a result, the book may not be suitable for a junior resident who is looking to foster a deeper understanding of neuroradiology.
On the other hand, this book should serve as a valuable resource to the experienced neuroradiologist, or the advanced trainee preparing for oral boards or the CAQ exam.
