ABR recertification rules shock new rads

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

Once upon a time, passing the boards in radiology meant you were a radiologist for life. No more. Newly minted radiologists are coming to grips with a new policy by the American Board of Radiology that requires them to undergo recertification every 10 years.

The new ABR program is particularly grating to some radiologists, as the ABR is asking them to pay $400 to enroll in the recertification program, even if they just passed the boards a year or two ago. We explore the details of the new program in an article by staff writer Tracie L. Thompson in our Residents Digital Community.

In its defense, the ABR states that the fees are in line with those of other medical specialties, which are also requiring physicians to recertify their qualifications. But many radiologists have objections to both recertification and the way the ABR is implementing the program. Read all about the story in our Residents Digital Community, at residents.auntminnie.com.
