Dear AuntMinnie Member,
A pair of stories we're featuring in our Musculoskeletal Imaging Digital Community this week demonstrate the modality's utility for a pair of increasingly common musculoskeletal ailments: wrist pain and meniscal tears.
In our first article, staff writer Shalmali Pal describes recent research into how ultrasound can help detect the cause of wrist pain, which is becoming a growing problem with all that texting, mousing, and typing we're doing these days.
Ultrasound has the potential to be an ideal screening tool for patients who show up with wrist pain, due to its low cost and ease of use. The researchers used ultrasound to scan several types of ligaments and cartilage in the wrist, and compared it to the gold standard, MR arthrography. Learn what they discovered by clicking here.
In another article in the community, staff writer Erik L. Ridley describes a recent study on ultrasound's effectiveness in diagnosing meniscal tears. As in the wrist-pain study, the researchers compared the modality to MRI to see how effective it was -- the goal was to learn whether ultrasound could be used in situations in which MRI was unavailable or unsuitable. They found that ultrasound can be a suitable alternative to MRI in some situations, but it has some limitations. Find out what they are by clicking here.
