Coronary calcium compared to other CVD measures

Spanish researchers sought to shed new light on the role of coronary calcium in a study we're featuring in our CT Digital Community.

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

The role of coronary calcium in cardiovascular disease is still hotly debated. While high calcium scores are clearly an indicator of elevated risk, many other questions remain unanswered, particularly with regard to calcium’s role in patient management and assessment of the atherosclerotic disease process.

Spanish researchers sought to shed new light on the subject with a study we're featuring in our CT Digital Community. The group wanted to determine when CT calcium screening wields the most power in predicting future cardiac events, according to an article by staff writer Eric Barnes.

The researchers compared Agatston calcium risk scores acquired using a multidetector CT scanner with other, non-imaging cardiac risk factors. While there was poor agreement between the CT-derived values and some risk factors, there was strong agreement in other areas.

As might be expected, the group found that calcium risk scores are complex measurements that may mean different things in different patients. Get the rest of the story in our CT Digital Community, at ct.auntminnie.com.
