Ophthalmologists eye ultrasound

Ophthalmologists are breaking new ground in their use of ultrasound to diagnose disorders of the posterior eye.

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

Ophthalmologists are breaking new ground in their use of ultrasound to diagnose disorders of the posterior eye. But you probably won't see any turf battles developing around it -- radiologists for the most part have ceded ocular ultrasound imaging to eye specialists.

That's unfortunate, according to a report on ultrasound eye imaging by staff writer Shalmali Pal that we're featuring in our Ultrasound Digital Community. Radiologists have focused on using more powerful modalities like MRI for eye imaging, while ophthalmologists typically use ultrasound scanners that are less advanced than the powerful machines found in your average radiology practice.

As a result, eye specialists say they would welcome any collaboration with radiologists that would give them access to more sophisticated technology. At the same time, radiologists could learn from some of the know-how that ophthalmologists have accumulated using ultrasound for eye imaging.

Still, radiologists might find that ocular ultrasound imaging requires some changes in the way they typically scan patients. See what they are in our Ultrasound Digital Community, at ultrasound.auntminnie.com.
