Johns Hopkins develops x-ray system to track stem cells

Researchers at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore have developed a new technique that transports therapeutic stem cells in a multilayer microcapsule to protect the cells from being attacked by the body's immune system, while enabling them to be seen on x-ray.

Using microcapsules dubbed XCaps that are visible using x-ray imaging techniques, the researchers were able to track the delivery, survival, and function of donor stem cells used to treat cardiovascular disease in rabbits. Results of the study were presented at the American College of Cardiology (ACC) annual meeting in New Orleans.
