Siemens Medical Systems has received Food and Drug Administration 510(k) clearance for its Somatom Plus 4 CT system with sliding gantry. Designed to be located in the treatment room with the vendor's Primus and Primart linear accelerators, the system brings CT imaging capability to the therapy delivery realm, according to Siemens' Concord, CA-based Oncology Care Systems group.
With the unit, the CT gantry moves along a set of high-precision rails, and encircles the patient lying on the treatment table. The gantry then makes incremental movements during the scanning process, and is easily retracted when image acquisition is complete. Using the updated tumor localization data, the Siemens linear accelerator will then deliver the optimal radiation therapy to the tumor while providing maximum sparing of normal tissue, according to the vendor.
Siemens will install the first combination Primus and Somatom Plus 4 with sliding gantry at Atlantic Health System's Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown, NJ. The combination system is an ongoing collaborative effort between Siemens, Morristown department chairman Dr. James Wong, and Dr. Minoru Uematsu of the National Defense College in Saitama, Japan.
