ADAC Laboratories today unveiled SmartSim, an integrated CT simulation and radiation therapy planning package designed to expedite radiation treatment planning.
The SmartSim package includes a CT simulation workstation based on the Milpitas, CA, vendor's Pinnacle3 radiation therapy planning system. Buyers can also get a refurbished CT scanner and optional 3-D dose-planning capabilities. The SmartSim CT workstation can also be interfaced to existing CT scanners via the DICOM data exchange standard, according to ADAC.
The SmartSim software reconstructs CT data into 3-D images and digitally reconstructed radiographs, allowing radiation oncologists to pinpoint the location, size, and shape of tumors more accurately, according to the firm. With that information, ADAC believes clinicians can determine optimal radiation beam placement for treatment of cancerous cells while minimizing the risk to nearby healthy tissue.
SmartSim also uses a single database for simulation and planning activities, eliminating the need to transfer data among separate components and allowing physicians to perform simulation and planning from a single workstation, according to ADAC. Shipments of SmartSim will begin this month.
