FDA approves Marconi's Infinite detector

Marconi Medical Systems has received Food and Drug Administration 510(k) clearance for Infinite Detector technology for its Mx8000 multislice CT scanner. Infinite Detector allows Mx8000 to produce 16-slice images, according to the Cleveland-based vendor.

When equipped with Infinite Detector, Mx8000 can cover more than 4 cm of patient anatomy in one second, with submillimeter isotropic accuracy, according to Marconi. The system's acquisition of thin slices provides image quality benefits for every scanning protocol, from whole-organ isotropic imaging to extended whole-body polytrauma surveys, Marconi said. Shipments will begin in mid-2002.
