Any registered nuclear medicine technologist, radiographer, or radiation therapist is qualified to operate CT/PET machines as well as other hybrid imaging equipment, according to a consensus panel convened by the Society of Nuclear Medicine Technologist Section of Reston, VA, and the American Society of Radiologic Technologists of Albuquerque, NM.
The group issued a 10-page report on hybrid imaging at a July 2002 meeting in New Orleans. The report, which is available online through SNM and ASRT, will be mailed to directors of state radiation control programs and RT licensure boards.
The group decided that it was not necessary for RTs to be certified in both nuclear medicine and radiography in order to run hybrid equipment, according to Donna Newman, ASRT president. Instead, the panel recommended that RTs seek specialized training on CT/PET equipment. Licensure boards would then recognize that level of expertise without requiring dual certification.
