GE Healthcare said it has received FDA clearance for a new family of wide-bore, 16-slice CT systems designed for radiation oncology and radiology use.
The system will be marketed in two configurations: LightSpeed RT16 and LightSpeed Xtra, both of which include a wide 80-cm gantry opening. LightSpeed RT16 is for radiation therapy planning, while LightSpeed Xtra is for trauma, interventional, and bariatric procedures, according to the Chalfont St. Giles, U.K.-based company.
LightSpeed Xtra produces image quality up to 800-peak mA and generates 16 mm x 0.625-mm thin-slice imaging, according to the company. GE also said that its Volara 24-bit Digital Data Acquisition System (DAS), packaged with LightSpeed Xtra, reduces noise up to 33%, while a new dose management product, 3D Dose Modulation, reduces radiation dose by 30%. LightSpeed Xtra is compatible with GE's SmartView real-time CT fluoroscopy technology.
The wide bore CT functionality is further enhanced by GE's Advantage SIM MD with 4D technology, the company said. The workstation offers multiplanar motion management to capture the full range of motion of internal structures and lesions while patients are breathing.
