FDA clears Siemens' syngo applications

Siemens Medical Solutions of Malvern, PA, has received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the first of many syngo dual-energy applications for its dual-source Somatom Definition CT system.

The clearance allows clinicians to use Somatom Definition's two x-ray sources at two energy levels in simultaneous spiral scanning. The system also allows for direct subtraction of bone in complex anatomical regions; virtual unenhanced liver images without the need for multiple scans; the ability to evaluate lung perfusion defects; visualization of cartilage, tendon, and ligaments; and differentiation between hard plaques and contrast agents, according to Siemens.

Somatom Definition is installed at more than 100 clinical facilities, and more than 15,000 cardiac patients have been scanned with the device without the need for beta-blockers.

Siemens has also launched Somatom Sensation Web Selection, which allows users to access 3D volume data anytime and from any workstation. Somatom Sensation Web Selection features Siemen's syngo Circulation software and offers z-Ultra High Resolution.
