A Northern California radiologic technologist (RT) who performed 151 CT scans on a 2-year-old boy in 68 minutes -- resulting in a massive radiation overdose -- has lost her appeal to have her RT license reinstated.
Raven Knickerbocker performed the scans on Jacoby Roth at Mad River Community Hospital in Arcata on January 23, 2008. The boy's parents took him to the hospital's emergency room after he fell out of bed and had difficulty moving his head.
Within a few hours of the scans, the child developed a bright red ring around his head from the massive radiation overdose. Knickerbocker was at a loss to describe the 151 scans, and claimed she only pushed the CT system's scan button about a half-dozen times.
Knickerbocker was subsequently fired by the hospital, and her RT license was revoked following hearings held by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). She appealed the revocation, but her appeal was rejected on March 11, 2011.
