Toshiba America Medical Systems and AHRA have named the seven recipients of their fourth annual Putting Patients First grant program.
The program's integrated delivery network/hospital system recipient, Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, received a grant of up to $20,000 for a four-month study to assess the effectiveness of using MR as the primary imaging tool for pediatric appendicitis.
Six other grants of up to $7,500 were awarded to hospitals, three focused on pediatrics and three on overall imaging, according to Toshiba.
In pediatrics, Fairview Health System in St. Paul, MN, received a grant to implement a Web-based educational program for families, patients, and providers of pediatric patients suffering from traumatic brain injuries and appendicitis. Cincinnati Children's Hospital was awarded a grant to provide pediatric patients in its radiology department with iPads as a calming tool, instead of using sedation or anesthesia, while Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, MI, was given a grant to develop an instructional video on the imaging process and offer information on radiation dose to prepare children and parents before an exam.
In general imaging, St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport, CT, received a grant to create an online educational tool to heighten awareness for its radiation safety program, while John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson, NY, was awarded a grant to educate patients and providers about the risk of radiation and install software that records dose information. Harnett Health Betsy Johnson Hospital in Dunn, NC, was given a grant to obtain measurable outcomes of its "Medical Imaging to Pharmacy" program that encourages greater coordination and communication, Toshiba said.
