Implementing the ACR's CT dose registry

The University of Washington has implemented the American College of Radiology's (ACR) CT dose registry, documenting a number of challenges relating to software installation, data transmission, and data consistency issues, most of which have been solved, Kalpana Kanal, PhD, told AuntMinnie.com.

The system relies on the use of the ACR's Transfer of Images and Data (TRIAD) acquisition and management software to receive and transmit DICOM structured dose report files from the institution's five CT scanners to ACR. The TRIAD program requires an extra exam-mapping process via the RadLex playbook, which assigns standard identifiers for each protocol to enable ACR to compare doses expressed in CT dose index volume (CTDIvol) and dose-length product (DLP) across institutions.

Preliminary results show that most of the 34 exams at the institution yielded similar radiation doses to the ACR's reported median dose, but five exams were higher at the University of Washington, which is currently trying to find the causes of these discrepancies, the researchers reported.
