Given's PillCam approved in Japan

Video-capsule developer Given Imaging has been given the green light for its PillCam SB 3 system in Japan.

Japan's Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA) granted approval for the third-generation system, which detects and monitors small-bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease.

The PillCam SB 3 approval comes on the heels of SB 3's approval in the U.S. and the approval of PillCam Colon in Japan.

The latest iteration has been enhanced to improve image quality, tissue coverage, and efficiency, according to Given. New adaptive frame rate technology allows the capsule to automatically increase the rate at which images are taken when it senses it is moving more quickly through the digestive tract, the firm said.

The company expects to begin selling PillCam SB 3 in Japan in 2014.
