3D detects ancient cancer
Meanwhile, researchers in South Africa used advanced 3D image rendering in conjunction with micro-CT scanning to dig up fascinating findings on what they believe is the earliest documented occurrence of cancer in humans.
Researchers scanned a hominin metatarsal specimen found in 1948 at a paleoanthropological site near Johannesburg with micro-CT, and reconstructed the images in 2D orthoslice and 3D surface-rendered views. They found signs that a tumor on the bone was malignant -- which would make the discovery at least 1 million years older than the previous confirmed case of a malignant tumor.
