Several physician groups have launched a new campaign to help doctors appropriately order and perform CT scans in children with minor head injuries.
Called "Think A-Head," the campaign is sponsored by the following organizations:
- American Academy of Pediatrics
- American Association of Neurological Surgeons/Congress of Neurological Surgeons Joint Section on Pediatric Neurosurgery
- American College of Emergency Physicians
- American College of Radiology's Image Gently Alliance
- American Society of Radiologic Technologists
The campaign will help providers appropriately order pediatric CT exams and use the correct radiation dose, explain to parents and caregivers why an exam is or is not necessary, and help parents be better informed when their child is prescribed a CT scan.
"This collaboration is a tremendous opportunity to ensure that providers have the latest information on which to base their medical decisions, that parents can take an active, informed role in advocating for their child's healthcare, and that children receive the most appropriate care for their medical situation," said Dr. Donald Frush, chair of the Image Gently Alliance, in a statement released by the group.
