NCI publishes free organ dose calculator

The U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI) has released a final version of its CT dose calculation software that is free for research purposes.

Based on work by Bahadori et al in 2015, the algorithm incorporates a CT dose index (CTDI) library based on machine outputs of more than 160 different scanners. The application calculates dose from an organ dose library that has been validated organ by organ and scanner by scanner.

Currently available resources include a computational human phantom series (binary voxel format or DICOM-image + structure), the National Cancer Institute Dosimetry System for Computed Tomography (NCICT), and dose coefficients for internal and external radiation exposure scenarios.

Individuals interested in obtaining these resources for research can visit the NCI dose application website, click on the "Agreement" tab, fill out the online form, and submit the software transfer agreement to the NCI Technology Transfer Center.
