The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared Canon Medical Systems USA's Aquilion Precision, an ultrahigh-resolution CT scanner.
The system can view anatomy as small as 150 microns and is designed to provide more than twice the resolution of other CT scanners, Canon said. Aquilion Precision contains a new detector, as well as x-ray tube, gantry, and reconstruction technologies. The system also uses radiation dose efficiently, with detector channels that are 0.25-mm thick.
Canon also improved the system's scintillator quantum efficiency, detector circuitry, and other components to create the dose-efficient detector. It features a focal spot tube of 0.4 mm x 0.5 mm and a routine 1024 x 1024-reconstruction matrix.
