Canon Medical Systems USA has installed its Aquilion Precision ultrahigh-resolution CT scanner at Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore.

The first institution in the U.S. to receive Aquilion Precision, Johns Hopkins will use the scanner to expand research capabilities for studies of liver disease, bone loss, lung disease, and coronary artery disease, Canon said. The system can view anatomy as small as 150 microns and is designed to provide more than twice the resolution of other CT scanners, according to the vendor.

Aquilion Precision features a new detector, as well as x-ray tube, gantry, and reconstruction technologies. The scanner uses radiation dose efficiently, benefitting from detector channels that are 0.25-mm thick, and includes improvements in scintillator quantum efficiency, detector circuitry, and other digital acquisition system components.

In addition, the scanner features a focal spot tube of 0.4 x 0.5 mm and a 1024 x 2048 reconstruction matrix, Canon said.
