Overall CT procedure volumes have decreased since 2018, but non-cardiac CT angiography (CTA) and low-dose CT (LDCT) for lung cancer screening have shown sustained growth over this period, according to IMV Medical Information Division.
IMV's recently published 2022 CT Market Outlook Report found the following over a five-year range of CT procedure volumes:
- In 2018, 88.7 million CT procedures were performed.
- In 2019, procedure volumes increased 3% to 91.4 million.
- In 2020, volumes dropped by 20.1% to 73 million.
- In 2021, volumes recovered 15.8% to 84.5 million.
- In 2022, procedures grew 0.9% to 85.3 million.
For the period, overall procedures declined 3.8% and in 2022 are down 6.7% from a 2019 peak. The five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) showed a modest annual decline of 0.8%, but the three-year CAGR showed positive momentum over the timeframe with a 5.3% annual growth rate.
Over the past five years, the CT procedure categories that have seen the largest gains in overall mix include CTA (noncardiac & cardiac) and LDCT, while those with the greatest declines in overall procedure mix include pelvis and abdomen exams, nonvascular brain procedures, and interventional procedures. Procedure volume by site type has also varied.

Radiology department sentiment regarding CT procedure volumes remains high, with 72% of sites reporting they expect CT procedures to grow in 2022, according to the survey results. A majority (53%) of sites stated that CT procedures "are increasing because some procedures are shifting from other imaging modalities to CT," while only 15% of sites disagreed with this statement.
Competition among sites remains low, with 46% of survey participants disagreeing with the statement that "competition with other CT imaging providers in our area is reducing the number of CT patients at our facility," and only 26% agreeing and 26% remaining neutral.
