Swissray inks 50-system sale for bioterror screening

Digital x-ray developer Swissray International has signed an agreement to supply 50 of its ddRModulaire digital radiography systems to DIANAssociates of Severna Park, MD. DIANA would use the systems for mobile screening of pulmonary disease caused by biological or chemical agents spread by terrorists, according to Swissray of Elmsford, NY.

The deal, worth roughly $14 million, is subject to several contingencies, such as receipt by DIANA of an attack preparedness order from the government, and DIANA's ability to obtain satisfactory financing commitments. Either party may terminate the agreement on 30 days' notice.

The systems would be installed in specially designed emergency vehicles, equipped with wideband telecommunications links to remote radiology reading centers. DIANA currently operates a teleradiology network for the Department of Justice, providing digital x-rays for tuberculosis detection on detained aliens at six border control points in the U.S. Images are then sent to a reading center at the University of Maryland in College Park, MD.
