FDA clears Siemens flat-panel mobile C-arm

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared a new mobile C-arm from Siemens Healthcare that is outfitted with a flat-panel digital detector.

The new Cios Alpha mobile C-arm wields a power output of 25 kW and a field-of-view up to 25% larger than that of conventional C-arms, Siemens said. The system offers several features designed to boost surgeons' confidence and operational workflow, including a touchscreen interface, a position storage feature, and an active cooling system to ensure high image quality during prolonged interventions.

The C-arm is intended for a wide range of surgical applications, such as vascular, orthopedic, and urological procedures, the company said. It is also useful when operating on obese patients who require more system power to obtain superior image quality, according to Siemens.

When an operator rotates an image, the system's new collimators -- which shield the patient and surgeon from unnecessary radiation -- follow automatically, tracking image rotation to ensure that the maximum field-of-view is displayed, Siemens said.
