Turner Imaging readies mini C-arm for RSNA 2018

X-ray technology developer Turner Imaging Systems will unveil its Smart-C mini C-arm at this week's RSNA 2018 meeting in Chicago.

Designed to provide fluoroscopy and x-ray imaging of patient extremities at the point of care, Smart-C can be hand-carried for use in hospitals, surgical suites, clinics, and post-acute care centers, or it can be used out in the field, according to the company. It weighs 16 lb and is powered by a battery.

Smart-C also includes an integrated surgical platform. The wireless system offers an independent articulating arm and monitor, as well as a collapsible design, Turner said.

The company believes Smart-C will be particularly useful for humanitarian aid workers such as those with Doctors Without Borders. In addition, the system could be used in emergency rooms, in-office outpatient orthopedic surgeries, care on battlefields, extremity injections for pain management, mobile radiology units in rural areas, and sports medicine, according to D. Clark Turner, PhD, founder and CEO.

Smart-C has not yet received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance.
