Interventional device manufacturer Intraluminal Therapeutics said it has developed a therapeutic system that combines vascular image guidance with the controlled delivery of radiofrequency (RF) energy for the ablation of calcified vascular lesions.
The guidance system is based on optical coherent reflectometry (OCR), which provides 10 times higher resolution (10-15 microns) than ultrasound, according to the Carlsbad, CA-based firm. The technology can accurately differentiate between plaque, thrombus, blood, and arterial wall to ensure safe intraluminal passage of the guidewire through an arterial total occlusion, Intraluminal said.
The accompanying Safe-Cross system delivers therapeutic RF energy for the ablation of calcified lesions. Together, the systems will enable interventionalists to safely cross and recanalize many total arterial occlusions, Intraluminal said.
