The Society of Interventional Radiology is convening a two-day summit this weekend to develop a collaborative approach to peripheral vascular disease (PVD) awareness and education. The summit, which will be held August 3-4, will bring together a coalition of medical organizations, advocacy groups, and government agencies.
SIR hopes the summit will lead to a framework to provide public education, public awareness, and improved detection for PVD, including abdominal aneurysm and stroke. A strategy could contain elements such as a principal focus on screening and public health awareness and a broad message about cardiovascular health with a focus on peripheral vascular health, according to the Fairfax, VA-based society.
The framework should also include all major vascular societies and medical specialties representing healthcare professionals who diagnose and treat cardiovascular disease, organizations representing at-risk patients, private philanthropies, nonprofit and public entities, and all parties with an interest in the field, SIR said.
The following organizations are participating in the summit:
- American Association for Vascular Surgery
- American College of Cardiology
- American Diabetes Association
- American Heart Association
- American Podiatric Medical Association
- American Radiological Nurses Association
- American Society of Interventional and Therapeutic Neuroradiology
- American Vascular Association
- National Institutes of Health
