Multimodality vendor GE Healthcare of Chalfont St. Giles, U.K., has signed a deal with intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) firm Volcano of Rancho Cordova, CA, to develop a new digital cardiovascular angiography system with integrated IVUS capabilities.
The relationship will marry GE's Innova cath lab platform with Volcano's new PC-based IVUS system. The combined system is intended to assist clinicians in determining the extent of cardiovascular disease and in performing therapeutic procedures such as stent placement. The system will also help physicians determine the length of lesions and stents, according to the companies.
Volcano's newest PC-based IVUS platform reduces the size, weight, and noise of the IVUS console, allowing the unit to be attached to the patient table, located in the control room, or in other areas outside of the daily traffic pattern of the cath lab, the companies said.
The combined system will require regulatory clearances in the U.S. and elsewhere, and will be co-marketed by GE and Volcano sales staff in the U.S., Europe, and other world markets. Current GE cath lab customers will be able to modify existing cath lab rooms with the new integrated IVUS system
In other GE news, the company announced a new remote-access software option, AW RemoteAcesss, for its Advantage Workstation 3D visualization computer. The new option enables users to access AW applications virtually anywhere via a networked PC or laptop.
