Abbott gets approval for vessel closure device

Interventional device firm Abbott Laboratories has received FDA approval for its StarClose vessel closure system.

StarClose is designed to be used in diagnostic catheterization procedures to stop bleeding. The device introduces a small circumferential clip onto the surface of the femoral artery, closing the artery in seconds following the procedure.

The clip is made of nitinol and is designed to be delivered "through the sheath," a feature intended to avoid skin contact and thus reduce the risk of infection, according to Abbott of Abbott Park, IL.
