CMS increases Gamma Knife reimbursement

Swedish radiation therapy and oncology device developer Elekta said that the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has raised the reimbursement payment for cobalt-60-based stereotactic radiosurgery, which includes Gamma Knife treatment delivery.

The payment coding for the procedure, HCPCS G0243, is under a clinical ambulatory payment classification, APC 0127, according to the Stockholm-based Elekta.

Effective this year, payment for Gamma Knife surgery under the Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment System (HOPPS), as published by CMS, will be increased by 28% as compared with the reimbursement rates for 2005, Elekta said.
