Abbott debuts catheter for chronic occlusions

Abbott Laboratories division Abbott Vascular has introduced its Asahi Tornus specialty catheter, a stainless steel device designed to deliver balloon catheters and stents to coronary and peripheral vessels blocked with chronic occlusions.

Tornus consists of several hair-thin stainless steel strands braided together to enhance flexibility and strength, along with a safety-release valve at the proximal end to indicate when the device has reached maximum rotation, according to Abbott of Redwood City, CA. It also includes a specialized tapered distal tip with a radiopaque marker for visualization in navigating difficult-to-access areas, Abbott said.

It’s available in two sizes: 2.1 Fr and 2.6 Fr. Tornus is manufactured by Japanese firm Asahi Intecc; Abbott has a licensing agreement with Asahi to distribute its guidewires in the U.S. and certain countries worldwide.
