Canadian radioisotope producer MDS Nordion is planning to spend $20 million to build a new cyclotron to produce medical radioisotopes. The cyclotron will produce iodine-123 and palladium-103, and will be located at an MDS Nordion facility in Vancouver.
Iodine-123 is used in the diagnosis of thyroid conditions such as cancer, as well as for neurological disorders like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Palladium is used in the treatment of prostate cancer.
The new cyclotron will double MDS Nordion's current product capacity at the Vancouver site. It is expected to be ready for production in January 2003.
