ProTom, MIT test accelerator

ProTom International of Flower Mound, TX, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Bates Linear Accelerator Center in Middleton, MA, have completed a successful test of proton beam acceleration and extraction from ProTom's compact proton therapy system after two months of installation and commissioning.

A proton beam was extracted with beam energy ranging from 30 MeV to 250 MeV, including dynamic real-time modulation of the intensity of the beam within each extraction cycle.

The tests, overseen by MIT engineers and scientists, represent the successful demonstration of a proton beam of clinical range from a small-footprint system.

ProTom plans to complete the formal review process with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to make the treatment tool clinically available to cancer patients in the U.S.
