AECL moves toward NRU repairs

Atomic Energy of Canada (AECL) this week completed data analysis that confirms that only six locations within its National Research Universal (NRU) nuclear reactor at Chalk River, Ontario, are in need of repair.

Crews this week began to clean surface corrosion in the unit so that repairs can begin, AECL reported.

The 52-year-old reactor, which supplies medical isotopes to North America, has been offline since May because of a major water leak. AECL's plan is to return the reactor to service in the first quarter of 2010.
