SNM and the Society for Pediatric Radiology (SPR) have expanded their pediatric radiation protection initiative by issuing guidelines for standardized radiopharmaceutical doses in children.
The two Reston, VA-based organizations this week issued the "North American Consensus Guidelines for Administered Radiopharmaceutical Activities in Children and Adolescents," a set of guidelines that standardize dose based on body weight for 11 nuclear medicine procedures commonly performed on children.
S. Ted Treves, MD, strategy leader of the Image Gently Nuclear Medicine Initiative and chief of nuclear medicine and molecular imaging at Children's Hospital Boston, said it is important that dose is standardized to help ensure that all pediatric nuclear medicine professionals consistently optimize medical images and only use the minimum amount of radiation necessary to obtain these images.
Dominique Delbeke, MD, PhD, president of SNM, added that SNM's practice guidelines are in the process of being updated and the new SNM guidelines will incorporate the doses recommended in the North American Consensus Guidelines.
The Alliance for Radiation Safety in Pediatric Imaging also collaborated in the effort.
