World-renowned nuclear medicine specialist Dr. R. Edward Coleman died on June 25 at the age of 69.
Coleman recently completed his 33rd year of service at Duke University. In 1979, he was appointed professor of radiology at Duke University Medical Center and also served as director of nuclear medicine and vice chairman of radiology.
As an early supporter of PET imaging technology, Coleman was a founder and first president of the Institute of Clinical PET (ICP) and a president of the Academy of Molecular Imaging (AMI). He also helped bring PET and MRI technology to Duke University and to hospitals throughout the world.
After completing an internship at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and residency at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, Coleman returned to St. Louis in 1972 for a fellowship in nuclear medicine at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology.
He then moved to the University of Utah, where he served as director of nuclear medicine.
