In an effort to make up for what it calls the shortcomings of both MRI and x-ray in breast imaging, Fonar has set its sights on developing an image-guided biopsy procedure for the early detection of breast cancer, the Melville, NY company has announced. The system will work with the company's works-in-progress Open Sky MRI and OR-360° scanners. Both offer the large field-of-view needed for diagnostic purposes, and the small field-of-view that works better in surgical applications, according to Fonar. Fonar hopes to place its MRI machines in university settings in order to begin clinical research.
