Marconi develops new MRI magnetic material

Marconi Medical Systems and research partner Imperial College of London have developed a new magnetic material that can be used in high-magnetic-field environments inside MR scanners.

The microstructured material is part of a larger family called photonic band gap materials, which have properties including high magnetic permeability, electric permeability, and refractive index, according to the Cleveland-based vendor. These parameters may even take negative values, according to Marconi.

Designed specifically for MR systems, the microstructured material has a high magnetic permeability for radiofrequency fields, but not for static fields, Marconi said. The firm believes it also has applications as a magnetic screen and, potentially, as a magnetic lens.

Marconi expects the material to improve performance by concentrating and shaping RF flux image acquisition patterns with increased immunity to external disturbances.
