Philips survey: Cardiac MRI use to grow

Cardiologists see a major role for cardiac MRI over the next five years, according to a recent survey by Philips Medical Systems.

In a computerized survey taken by 202 cardiologists attending last month's American College of Cardiology meeting, Philips asked cardiologists what role cardiac MRI would play in their cardiology practice over the next five years.

Eighty-five percent of the respondents predicted an important role, with more than half of those surveyed predicting a very important role, according to the Dutch multimodality vendor. Only 13% felt cardiac MRI would not be important to their practice.

The Philips survey also questioned cardiologists on their preference in cath lab capabilities. Cardiologists were asked whether they would purchase a dedicated cath lab, which could perform cardiac procedures only, or a lab with both coronary and peripheral capabilities, which could also perform vascular procedures. Fifty-one percent opted for a dedicated lab, while 43% would choose a lab with both coronary and peripheral capabilities, according to Philips.
