First Fonar 360 scanner sold

MRI vendor Fonar of Melville, NY, has sold the first of its Fonar 360 room-size scanners, to a hospital in Oxford, U.K. The scanner uses a unique open design, with magnet poles protruding from the floor and ceiling of the room, and other magnet components built into the walls of the room.

Fonar sold the system to Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre (NOC) NHS Trust, a 190-bed specialist teaching hospital. The hospital is building a specially designed suite to accommodate the Fonar 360 system.

Fonar says the 0.6-tesla system's open design makes patients more comfortable and supports the use of MRI-guided interventional procedures. The scanner room can also be decorated with patient-friendly motifs, according to the company.
