Hologic of Bedford, MA, will demonstrate a new version of the dedicated extremity MRI scanner that the company is selling in the U.S. through a partnership with Italian imaging vendor Esaote. The initiative is part of a program Hologic launched in 2006 to expand the company's emphasis from bone densitometry systems to a broader focus on skeletal health.
The new scanner, Opera, is the outgrowth of a relationship that Hologic formed with Esaote in 2005. Designed for orthopedic specialists, the system is a major upgrade and redesign of Esaote's 0.2-tesla E-Scan XQ platform that Hologic has been selling.
Opera now supports complete imaging of all extremities, according to Hologic, including hip and shoulder applications. The scanner also includes what the company calls "real-time positioning," which speeds patient setup and reduces exam times. Look for Hologic to highlight the scanner's open design, which the company says reduces anxiety and enhances patient comfort.
