Illinois MRI leasing suit refiled

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan has begun refiling civil lawsuits against Chicago-area MRI centers suspected of participating in kickback schemes, according to an article published last week in the Chicago Tribune.

Attorneys in Madigan's office are expected to file five cases, grouped by ownership, according to the article. Each grouping will apparently offer more specifics against companies or the more than 20 centers they operate.

Madigan's office said it has also reached settlements with several smaller operators. The settlements did not include admission of wrongdoing, according to the article.

One company, Central States Imaging, has agreed to pay $40,000 to a compliance fund set up by Madigan's office, and an additional $25,000 to MRI center operator John Donaldson, according to the Chicago Tribune. Donaldson had filed the original civil suit, which was later joined by the state.

Madigan is being forced to refile the litigation after a state judge ruled in September that he needed more details on the allegations against each defendant.
