Campbell County Memorial Hospital in Gullette, WY, is changing its procedures in the wake of an MRI-related accident that injured an ultrasound technologist.
A report in the Gillette News Record noted that the incident occurred three weeks ago when a metal wheelchair was brought into the MRI suite. A female patient was pushed backward by the wheelchair due to the pull of the MRI's magnet. The patient was not injured.
The technician is on medical leave with injured ribs, shoulders, and neck, according to the report.
Because of the accident, the hospital has ordered two more nonmetal wheelchairs for MRI patients, will transport patients in only MRI-compatible wheelchairs, will consider more safety alarms for the entrance into the MRI room, and will have MRI patients complete a revised safety checklist before entering the MRI room, among other measures.
