GE Healthcare has received a pair of awards from an industrial design society for several "concept" MRI scanners, as well as an award for a scanner that's pending 510(k) clearance.
The Industrial Designers Society of America gave GE silver awards in its International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) competition for a pediatric MRI concept called Nino and an extremity MRI concept.

Both the Nino concept and the extremity MRI concept represent R&D efforts that may never be commercialized, GE pointed out in announcing the awards, and neither scanner has been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
In addition, GE's Discovery MR750w wide-bore 3-tesla scanner also received a silver award. That system is pending 510(k) clearance from the FDA.
GE Healthcare's global design team has been playing a more prominent role in the development of the company's imaging products, and the healthcare division has won 10 medals in the past three years.
