FDA schedules MRI safety workshop

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has scheduled a two-day public workshop on MRI safety for October 25-26.

The purpose of the forum, at the FDA's White Oak Campus in Silver Spring, MD, is to discuss ways to use MRI safely and eliminate accidents and unnecessary risks.

The agenda will include general MRI safety, ferromagnetic detectors, scanning patients with medical implants, and the impact of innovation on MRI safety concerns.

As the agency noted in its announcement, MRI technology, implanted medical devices, and medical device accessories are becoming more complex, and the increasing demand to scan patients with implanted or accessory medical devices has the potential to cause inherent hazards in the MRI environment.

Through the workshop, the FDA and other groups will develop steps to promote MRI safety, increase awareness of safety issues in the MRI environment, and identify regulatory, policy, and other solutions to mitigate risk.
